Honorable Mention - Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
Cleveland’s Central Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan identifies opportunities and outlines strategies to improve the lives of all residents, students and businesses. The 18 month planning process included extensive outreach and stakeholder involvement. The Central neighborhood, encompassing approximately 670 acres, is home to over 10,000 residents and several large institutions, ranging from college campuses to medical facilities. The tenets of the Choice planning program: Neighborhood, People and Housing are addressed individually to fully understand the services available, but more importantly, as a complete system to offer new opportunities and access for all. The plan’s primary objective is to improve the quality of life throughout the district by strengthening the relationships between the various organizations, many of which share a mission of social justice and equity.
The plan, funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is championed by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA). CHMA’s commitment to improving the lives for their residents served as a recognizable passion for the plan. At the plan's core is the complete reconstruction and repositioning of CMHA’s Cedar Extension Estates. This 17 acre “superblock” included post-war, bunker style housing.The plan outlines a new neighborhood for the Cedar Extension Estate site with new streets and green spaces that link residents to each other and the surrounding street network.
The resulting Central Choice Transformation Plan’s intense study of key urban land in Cleveland’s core uncovers, challenges and opportunities, forges relationships and partnerships, and creates action plans to affect positive change in one of the region’s most impoverished neighborhoods.
